In Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah SWT tells us:
“O believers! When you are told to make room in gatherings, then do so. Allah will make room for you ˹in His grace˺. And if you are told to rise, then do so. Allah will elevate those of you who are faithful, and ˹raise˺ those gifted with knowledge in rank. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.”
This emphasizes the importance of humility and responsiveness to instruction, traits that characterize individuals who are both faithful and knowledgeable. The subsequent verses reinforce the idea that those bestowed with knowledge are the most conscious and reverent of Allah SWT, devoid of arrogance.
The connection between faith and the acquisition of knowledge, particularly knowledge of the deen (religion), is highlighted. In Islam, the possession of ilm (knowledge) is considered a priceless gift from Allah SWT. This knowledge is not merely material; it is a spiritual and intellectual endowment that holds immeasurable value. When Allah grants the understanding of the deen, it is a blessing, a source of guidance, and a means of drawing closer to Him.
The words of the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) further highlight significance of knowledge in Islam. He proclaimed, “When Allah wishes good for someone, He bestows upon him the understanding of Deen” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim). This hadith emphasizes that true goodness lies in the comprehension and application of religious knowledge. It portrays knowledge as a manifestation of Allah’s benevolence and a pathway to righteousness.
In light of this profound guidance, believers are encouraged to perceive the opportunity to acquire knowledge as a divine blessing. The pursuit of knowledge, especially in matters of the deen, is an act of worship and an expression of gratitude for the bestowed gift. It is imporatnt that as Muslims, we approach this opportunity with ihsaan, striving for excellence and sincerity in the quest for understanding.
May Allah SWT allow us as believers to cherish the gift of knowledge and strive to embody the virtues of Islam in our lives daily. Ameen.
